Critical Issues for Nigeria’s ICT Growth in 2025

Experts predict 2025 will be a game-changer for the ICT sector. Innovations in robotics and Artificial Intelligence are set to reshape the global landscape. In Nigeria, however, the ICT sector faces challenges and opportunities.

A key issue is the push for tariff increases in telecom services. Operators argue that the current rates, unchanged for over a decade, no longer reflect the real cost of service delivery. The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) warns that failure to adjust tariffs could lead to service disruptions.

The government acknowledges this need but also emphasizes structural reforms. Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Digital Communications, calls for increased investment in infrastructure and innovation to make the sector more competitive.

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) suggests a modest tariff increase of five percent. This would maintain affordability while allowing operators to improve services.

Competition is heating up, especially after the SIM card-NIN linkage mandate in 2024. This led to the disconnection of over 64 million lines. Operators will focus more on innovation and infrastructure to retain customers, especially by offering data-driven services like streaming and e-learning.

Collaboration is key. Policies like “dig once” and global partnerships with companies like Microsoft and Google can help reduce costs and improve efficiency. These efforts will bridge the digital divide and boost sustainability.

The government’s 3 Million Tech Talent (3MTT) initiative aims to upskill workers and position Nigeria as a digital leader. Startups backed by government funding will address local challenges and contribute to the economy.

The Digital Economy Bill will foster innovation, attract investment, and drive inclusivity. With continued investment in infrastructure and digital services, Nigeria has the potential to lead Africa’s digital economy.
