EFCC Arraigns 11 Chinese Nationals, One Filipino and Company for Alleged Cybercrimes and Romance Fraud in Lagos

In a major breakthrough in the fight against cybercrime and financial fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Lagos Zonal Directorate has successfully arraigned 11 Chinese nationals, one Filipino, and a company, Genting International Co. Ltd., before Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. The defendants, who are part of an extensive syndicate, were implicated in an elaborate cryptocurrency investment and romance fraud operation.

The shocking arrests occurred on December 19, 2024, during a surprise sting operation by EFCC operatives, dubbed the “Eagle Flush Operation,” which uncovered a large network of 792 alleged fraudsters operating across multiple jurisdictions. The accused individuals face a slew of serious charges including cybercrimes, cyber-terrorism, possession of fraudulent documents, and identity theft, which have left a trail of victims across the country and beyond.

Among those arraigned are: Wang Zheng Ming, Li Yin Hui, Xian Hong Will, Zhang Xiao Lei, Long Zhao Ming, Guo Xiao Fei, Yang Sheng, Wang Zheng Feng, Chen Wenyuan, Liu San Hua, Luo Jia You, and Rheign Dela Vega. The charges against them highlight the sophisticated nature of the fraud, which spanned several sectors including cryptocurrency schemes and the notorious “romance scam,” where unsuspecting victims were targeted and manipulated into financial loss.

One of the most chilling charges against the defendants alleges that they conspired with Nigerian youths to commit identity theft and posed as foreign nationals, intending to gain a financial advantage. This crime not only undermines public trust but also threatens national security, destabilizing the legal and constitutional frameworks designed to protect Nigerians from such cybercrimes.

A specific charge reads: “That you, LI YIN HUI and GENTING INTERNATIONAL CO. LIMITED, on or about the 18th of December 2024 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, willfully caused to be accessed computer systems organized to seriously destabilize the constitutional structure of Nigeria (which prohibits and prevents cyber and related crimes) when you procured/employed Nigerian youths for identity theft and to hold themselves out as persons of foreign nationality, with the intent to gain financial advantage for yourselves.”

The EFCC has vowed to continue its aggressive pursuit of these transnational criminal networks, ensuring that individuals and organizations involved in such fraudulent activities face the full weight of the law. This case serves as a stern reminder of the far-reaching impact of cybercrimes on both individuals and nations, with the EFCC taking proactive steps to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s cyberspace and the economy at large.

The trial continues as the court hears more details of the alleged fraud, while the EFCC remains vigilant in its mission to eradicate these syndicates and safeguard the nation from further criminal exploitation.
