A Lagos-based electrician, known simply as Sheni, was electrocuted on New Year’s Day while fixing wiring connections at UNILAG Estate in the Magodo area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred around 5 pm when residents requested Sheni’s service after experiencing a power outage. He had climbed a pole to work on the wiring when electricity was unexpectedly restored to the high-tension line. The sudden surge of power electrocuted him, and he was later seen dangling from the pole.
A resident described the tragic moment, saying, “We didn’t know he was in danger until we noticed he wasn’t moving. We saw him bend backward and dangle from the pole.” Another resident, Dapo, confirmed that emergency services were called, but despite efforts to rescue him, Sheni was confirmed dead at the scene.
Police and emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident. His body was taken to the morgue, and efforts to contact his relatives are ongoing. Investigations into the cause of the electrocution are also underway.
