The Enugu State Government, in partnership with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has conducted a simulation exercise at Akanu Ibiam International Airport to bolster preparedness against potential infectious disease outbreaks during the busy yuletide season.
Held at the premises of the Nigeria Safety and Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the exercise brought together FAAN personnel and various health-related agencies operating at the airport. The initiative aims to ensure that Enugu remains safe and free from infectious diseases as international and local travelers flood the region for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, emphasized the importance of the exercise, describing it as a proactive measure to prevent and combat public health emergencies. Enugu State stands at risk of an outbreak of infectious diseases due to the international airport that serves as an entry point for individuals coming into the South East states for the yuletide celebrations. This underscores the need to sensitize airport workers to step up to their responsibilities, Obi said.
The Regional Airport Manager for South East Airports, Mr. Hillary Umunna, represented by FAAN’s Head of Operations, Mrs. Udenze Onyeka, reassured attendees of FAAN’s continued collaboration with the state health ministry to prevent outbreaks. “Our workers are prepared to work hand-in-hand with health officials to safeguard public health during this season, Onyeka said.
State epidemiologist Dr. Okechukwu Ogbodo provided an overview of the simulation, underscoring the need for airport workers to remain vigilant. He noted that diseases such as mpox and COVID-19 can spread rapidly, highlighting the critical role of airport personnel in identifying potential cases, maintaining accurate records, and taking swift action to mitigate risks.
The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public health systems and demonstrates the commitment of the Enugu State Government and its partners to protecting residents and visitors alike during the festive period.
