Éric Chelle’s short-term contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may not extend beyond 2025, potentially ruling him out as the Super Eagles’ coach for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Chelle’s future depends on Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With the Super Eagles currently struggling in Group C, sitting 5th with just three points from four matches, Chelle’s contract could be cut short if the team fails to secure a spot in the tournament. Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin Republic are ahead with seven points each, while Lesotho holds five points.
The final World Cup qualifying match is scheduled for Matchday 10 between 6th and 14th October 2025, when Nigeria will host Benin Republic in Uyo. The outcome of this match will determine whether Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup and if Chelle’s contract will be extended.
The 2025 AFCON will begin on December 21, 2025, and run until January 18, 2026, marking the first time the tournament is held during the Christmas and New Year period.
