Ex-Internationals and Fans Criticize Chelle’s Appointment as Super Eagles Coach

Some former Nigerian football internationals and fans have raised concerns over the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appointing former Mali coach, Éric Chelle, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

In separate interviews with NAN on Wednesday, the ex-internationals questioned Chelle’s qualifications to lead the national team.

Kadiri Ikhana, a former Super Falcons coach and ex-international, expressed disappointment in the choice, arguing that homegrown coaches should be given the opportunity to prove themselves at the international level. He stated, “Chelle is not better than our local coaches. If we don’t give them a chance to grow, how will they develop?” Ikhana, who led Enyimba to the African Champions League title in 2003, criticized the NFF for ignoring capable local coaches.

Similarly, Harrison Jalla, former international and Chairman of the Professionals Football Association of Nigeria, Task Force, criticized Chelle’s appointment. “He was sacked by the Malian Football Federation for poor performance,” Jalla said, pointing out that Chelle’s record in FIFA World Cup qualifications was subpar.

Some fans also voiced their disappointment, suggesting the NFF should have kept the coaching team led by Augustine Eguavoen.
