FG Commits N1.77 Billion to Transform Animal Health and Livestock Management

The Federal Government is taking decisive action to improve animal health, prevent diseases, and ensure sustainable livestock management. In its 2025 budget, the government has allocated N1.77 billion to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development for key projects aimed at boosting the sector’s growth and resilience.

Prioritizing Disease-Free Zones

The government is actively addressing disease outbreaks by creating disease-free zones in critical locations.

  • N92.5 million is allocated for establishing these zones in areas like Mambilla Plateau, Obudu Ranch, Jigawa, and Ogun States.
  • N24.6 million will strengthen Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to attract investments in animal health infrastructure.

Boosting Stakeholder Capacity

To ensure stakeholders are well-equipped, the government is channeling funds into capacity-building initiatives.

  • N52 million will fund in-service training for veterinarians, paraprofessionals, and community animal health workers.
  • N23.5 million will go towards workshops on monitoring and evaluation, ensuring efficient project implementation.

Launching Nationwide Vaccination Programs

The government has prioritized mass vaccination programs to protect livestock from deadly diseases.

  • N150 million will fund 1 million doses of CBPP vaccine for cattle.
  • N300 million will provide 2 million doses of PPR vaccine for sheep and goats.
  • N70 million will secure 1 million NCD vaccine doses for poultry.
    These programs aim to protect livestock and boost productivity across the country.

Strengthening Disease Surveillance

To combat outbreaks more effectively, the government is stepping up disease surveillance.

  • N127.5 million is earmarked for controlling zoonotic diseases like anthrax and rabies.
  • N52.5 million will fund emergency stockpiles to tackle unexpected outbreaks.

Investing in Modern Infrastructure

The government is committed to improving facilities and equipment to enhance livestock services.

  • N90 million will construct a solar-powered vaccine cold room in Oyo State.
  • N270 million is allocated for ambulatory vehicles to support federal veterinary medical centers.
  • N125 million will provide state-of-the-art vaccination equipment.

Expanding Animal Feed and Fodder Systems

Recognizing the importance of quality feed, the government is driving initiatives to boost production.

  • N34 million will fund the 3rd National Animal Feed Summit and quality assurance workshops.
  • N44 million will expand the National Egg Production Scheme (NEGPRO) in Ogun State, increasing egg production and supporting food security.

Strengthening Global Partnerships

The government is actively pursuing international collaborations to improve Nigeria’s livestock sector.

  • N25.5 million is allocated for participation in the International Poultry Production Expo (IPPE) in partnership with the US Poultry and Egg Association.
