In a shocking and tragic turn of events, at least 11 people have been reported killed by unidentified gunmen in an attack on several communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack, which took place on December 25 during Christmas celebrations, has left the community in mourning and fear.
Residents of Nyiev-ya confirmed the distressing news, with one local revealing that the attack began in the afternoon when terrorist herders stormed the area. Ubutu and GSS Anwase were among the targeted communities, where houses were burned, and lives were brutally taken. “Daniel Jam’s son was killed by the terrorists. Pray for our community for God’s and Government intervention,” said one of the residents, speaking on condition of anonymity.
While the killings were taking place in Tse Azege, reports also emerged of another ongoing attack in the nearby Ityuluv area. One resident implored the local government to act swiftly to address the situation, saying, “If there is anything the chairman or the government will do, let it be fast. The news coming from Kwande is still not pleasant.”
Iorbee Ihagh, the President General of Mzough U Tiv Worldwide, a community leader from Kwande LGA, confirmed the attack. Describing it as unprovoked, Ihagh said, “The attackers, who were herdsmen, invaded the communities and attacked the people. Many are still missing.” The attack has led to widespread fear, and local leaders have reported the incident to the police.
Solomon Amande, another local resident, corroborated the reports of the killings, identifying the perpetrators as armed herders and militia groups. “11 people were killed in the attack, and the killings were carried out by armed herders and militia groups,” Amande stated.
Despite the devastating scale of the attack, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, stated she had no information on the incident, leaving many residents frustrated by the lack of official response.
As the search for the missing continues, and tensions rise in the affected communities, residents are calling for urgent action from the government to prevent further violence and provide security in the region.
