A devastating gunpowder explosion at the Talata Mafara market in Zamfara State has left at least five people dead and over 50 others injured. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 3:45 p.m., causing chaos as traders and shoppers scrambled for safety.
According to eyewitness reports, the blast originated from a blacksmith’s workshop, where large quantities of gunpowder were allegedly stored. The explosion triggered a fire outbreak, engulfing nearby shops and sending thick smoke billowing into the sky.
Muhammad Aliyu, one of the traders present at the scene, recounted the horrifying moment:
“The explosion happened at the blacksmith’s tent in the market. I was very lucky—I had just left the area when I heard the explosion, and then fire broke out.”
Local residents and emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene to provide aid. Authorities later confirmed the recovery of five bodies, most of whom were burned beyond recognition. The injured victims, some suffering from severe burns and fractures, were immediately taken to Talata Mafara General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Although the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, sources suggest that improper handling of gunpowder may have contributed to the disaster. Given the widespread use of explosive materials in blacksmithing and local firearm production, safety concerns have been raised over the storage and handling of such volatile substances.
Efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Command for official comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report. However, security agencies are expected to launch an investigation into the incident to determine the root cause and prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, community leaders and market officials have called for stricter safety measures, urging traders to adhere to regulations on hazardous materials. Residents have also expressed concerns over the availability of explosive substances in local markets, warning that failure to regulate them could lead to more tragedies.
As authorities continue their investigation, the people of Talata Mafara mourn the loss of lives and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.
