In a harrowing tale of abuse and extortion, Obinna Henry, a hair vendor and cryptocurrency enthusiast from Enugu State, recounted how he was falsely accused of being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and subjected to brutal treatment by armed policemen. The incident, which took place on November 20, 2024, saw Henry extorted of $25,000, money he had set aside for his business ventures.
Obinna, who was en route to visit family in Oji River, was flagged down by a group of armed policemen in a white Toyota Hiace bus with a government-issued number plate. Initially, he presented all necessary documents including his vehicle papers, driver’s license, and tint permit. However, the officers, despite finding no evidence of wrongdoing, forcefully detained him, claiming the right to investigate.
As the situation escalated, Henry was handcuffed, beaten, and threatened with being labeled an IPOB member if he did not comply with their demands. The officers continued to harass him, eventually forcing him to unlock his phones. Upon discovering money in his wallet account, the officers began to demand that he transfer the funds to them, threatening violence if he refused.
The ordeal reached a chilling climax when the officers drove him to a secluded location surrounded by bushes, where they intensified their demands. Despite the constant threats and physical abuse, Obinna managed to secure his release, though not before his life was put in jeopardy. The officers then took the extorted funds and left him stranded.
Henry’s efforts to seek justice have been met with significant roadblocks. Although he provided proof of the transaction, his attempts to reach authorities have largely gone unanswered.
