The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and public affairs commentator Dr. Makama have reacted to the reported killing of the son of notorious bandit leader Bello Turji in a military operation. The incident, which occurred during a recent airstrike targeting the camps of bandit groups in Zamfara State, has sparked varied responses across the country.
HURIWA, in a statement released on Wednesday, commended the efforts of the Nigerian military in intensifying operations against banditry in the region. The rights group noted that the killing of Turji’s son signifies a major step in dismantling the networks of terror that have plagued the North-West. However, it also called for caution, urging security forces to ensure that their actions comply with international human rights laws to avoid collateral damage.
“The Nigerian government must intensify intelligence-led operations to weaken these bandit groups while ensuring that innocent lives are not caught in the crossfire,” HURIWA said. It emphasized the need for sustainable strategies to address the root causes of banditry, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of education.
Dr. Makama, on his part, described the operation as a “symbolic victory” in the fight against criminality in Zamfara and neighboring states. Speaking during a live television interview, he noted that targeting the family of a notorious bandit leader sends a strong message to criminal elements. However, he warned that this could lead to retaliation from Turji’s loyalists if proactive measures are not taken.
“While this may serve as a significant blow to Bello Turji, it is important for security agencies to be on high alert for any reprisal attacks,” Makama stated. He further emphasized the need for the federal government to combine military actions with community engagement initiatives to curb the rise of banditry in rural areas.
The death of Bello Turji’s son is part of a broader offensive by the Nigerian Air Force against criminal hideouts in the North-West. Military sources have disclosed that the strikes targeted multiple camps linked to Turji and other bandit leaders, with the aim of crippling their operational capacities.
As the news of the killing spreads, it has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. While many have praised the military for its efforts to restore peace and security, others have expressed concerns about the possibility of increased violence in the region.
The Zamfara government has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces to ensure lasting peace in the state.
