Israel Orders Army to Prepare for Gaza Residents’ Voluntary Departure Amid Controversial U.S. Proposal

Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, on Thursday instructed the Israeli military to prepare a plan that would allow for the voluntary departure of residents from the Gaza Strip. The directive comes on the heels of a controversial announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who unveiled plans for the United States to take control of Gaza, resettle its Palestinian residents, and transform the area into a luxurious Middle Eastern destination, likened to the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

In a statement, Katz expressed his support for Trump’s ambitious plan, asserting that Gaza’s residents should be given the freedom to leave the area and emigrate, arguing that such actions are a standard practice across the globe. “I welcome President Trump’s bold plan. Gaza residents should be allowed the freedom to leave and emigrate, as is the norm around the world,” Katz stated.

When questioned about which countries would accept the Palestinians, Katz pointed to nations that have previously criticized Israel’s military operations in Gaza, suggesting that they should bear the responsibility of offering refuge. He named countries such as Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which have been vocal in their opposition to Israeli actions in Gaza. Katz contended that these countries, which have leveled accusations against Israel, are legally obligated to open their borders to Gaza’s residents. “Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway, and others, which have leveled accusations and false claims against Israel over its actions in Gaza, are legally obligated to allow any Gaza resident to enter their territories,” Katz said.

Trump’s plan, which envisions resettling Palestinians outside of Gaza, has sparked sharp international backlash. On Wednesday, several global powers, including Russia, China, and Germany, voiced strong criticism, arguing that the proposal would only lead to further suffering and exacerbate existing tensions. These countries contended that the plan would inflame the already volatile situation in the region and deepen the cycle of violence.

Saudi Arabia, a prominent regional power, firmly rejected Trump’s proposal, while King Abdullah II of Jordan, who is scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House next week, also expressed his opposition. King Abdullah stated on Wednesday that he categorically rejected any efforts to annex Palestinian land or forcibly displace its residents.

Despite the widespread condemnation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed cautious support for the U.S. initiative. On Wednesday, Netanyahu described Trump’s proposal as “remarkable” and encouraged further exploration of the plan. However, Netanyahu did not elaborate on the specific details of what Trump’s proposal would entail, nor did he clarify Israel’s stance on the broader implications of the plan.

The proposed relocation of Gaza’s residents is part of Trump’s broader Middle East peace strategy, which has been heavily criticized for its perceived bias toward Israel and for its disregard of Palestinian aspirations for statehood. Trump’s administration has already been under fire for its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and its decision to move the U.S. embassy to the city, which Palestinians claim as their future capital.

The announcement of this new plan has further strained Israel’s relationships with the international community, particularly with countries that have historically supported Palestinian rights. While Israel continues to assert that it is open to discussions regarding peace in the region, the recent developments have raised doubts about the prospects for meaningful negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

As the situation continues to unfold, many in the region and around the world are closely monitoring the responses of both Palestinian leaders and international powers to the proposed U.S. plan for Gaza.
