A breathtaking moment unfolded off the coast of Punta Arenas, Chile, as a massive humpback whale unexpectedly swallowed a kayaker before spitting him out unharmed—an astonishing survival story that has captivated global audiences.
Adrian Simancas, a 24-year-old kayaker, was paddling through the frigid waters of southern Chile when the giant marine mammal suddenly breached the surface, engulfing him and his yellow kayak. Within mere seconds, he was expelled from the whale’s mouth, reemerging in the open water, visibly shocked but unharmed.
Captured on video by his father, Dell Simancas, the footage has since gone viral, drawing millions of views across social media platforms. In the clip, his father can be heard shouting, “Relax! Relax!”, attempting to calm his son in the heart-stopping moments following the encounter.
Simancas described the experience as surreal, recalling that he saw something “blue and white passing close to my face” before he was dragged underwater. “I didn’t understand what was happening, and then I sank. I thought it had eaten me.” His father, watching in horror, momentarily lost sight of him. “That was the only moment of fear I really had, because I didn’t see him for like three seconds. And suddenly, he shot out.”
Marine biologists have weighed in on the incredible incident, emphasizing that despite its dramatic nature, the whale could not have actually swallowed the kayaker. Maria Jose Perez, a marine expert at the University of Chile, explained that humpback whales have small throats, preventing them from consuming large objects like humans.
“It appears the kayak was in the whale’s feeding zone, where it was lunging for krill or small fish,” Perez stated. “That’s why it surfaced sideways with its mouth wide open.” Experts note that such incidents are extremely rare but can occur when whales fail to detect small, silent vessels like kayaks.
Humpback whales are filter feeders, using baleen plates to sift plankton and fish from seawater. While they can consume up to 2,000 pounds of food daily, their throats are only about the size of a grapefruit, making it impossible for them to swallow a human whole.
Despite the scientific explanations, the dramatic footage has sparked widespread discussion and speculation, with many comparing the event to scenes from legendary sea tales. Wildlife conservationists have also used the moment to raise awareness about respecting marine ecosystems, urging kayakers and boaters to maintain a safe distance from feeding whales to avoid accidental encounters.
Simancas, now safely back on land, remains grateful for his miraculous escape. “I still can’t believe it happened,” he said in an interview. “I’ll keep kayaking, but I might think twice before going near a whale again.”
As the video continues to circulate, drawing millions of reactions worldwide, experts hope it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable beauty and power of nature, as well as the importance of coexisting responsibly with marine life.
