Lagos Assembly Crisis: 36 Lawmakers Pass Vote of Confidence on Speaker Meranda

The leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly took a significant turn on Monday, as 36 lawmakers passed a motion of confidence in the Speaker, Princess Mojisola Meranda, affirming their belief in her ability to lead the Assembly despite the ongoing internal strife.

The motion was moved by Oladipo Ajomale, the member representing Oshodi/Isolo 2. In his address, Ajomale made it clear that Meranda had been duly elected by the Assembly members and that her leadership qualities were undisputed. Ajomale emphasized that, in spite of the internal challenges and leadership disputes, the lawmakers remained united in their support for the Speaker, stressing that she was fully capable of navigating the complex political environment within the Assembly.

The motion was seconded by Aro Moshood, after which all the remaining 34 lawmakers present at the session added their voices to support Meranda, effectively passing the vote of confidence. This was seen as a decisive moment for the Speaker, particularly in the context of the ongoing challenges that have rocked the legislative body in recent weeks.

However, this show of solidarity came amid heightened tensions and increased security around the Assembly complex. Earlier in the day, operatives from the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force were seen taking over the Assembly complex at Alausa, Ikeja. The heavy security presence was a clear indication of the seriousness of the situation and the state of heightened alert within the legislative precincts. The security operatives were reportedly deployed to maintain peace and order during the plenary session and to ensure that the Assembly’s proceedings could take place without disruptions.

The move to pass the vote of confidence in Meranda was aimed at stabilizing the Assembly amid reports of factionalism and internal strife that have been destabilizing the legislative body. Several lawmakers have previously voiced concerns over the leadership of the Speaker, which has led to growing divisions within the Assembly. This divide has even spilled over into public discourse, with some factions questioning Meranda’s ability to handle the leadership role effectively.

Despite the challenges, Ajomale, in his motion, reiterated that the Speaker had earned the trust and respect of the majority of lawmakers in the House, and that they were committed to ensuring that she continued her role as Speaker for the benefit of the people of Lagos State. His motion was strongly backed by the Assembly, signaling that Meranda still holds significant support among her colleagues.

After the vote of confidence, the House adjourned its sitting until further notice. This move indicates that the leadership crisis in the Assembly is far from over, and there may be further developments in the coming days. Lawmakers and stakeholders in Lagos State will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds, particularly as the state government works to address the issues that have caused the turmoil within the House.

In light of the heavy security presence and the passing of the vote of confidence, many are now asking whether this crisis will be resolved internally or if it will escalate into a larger political confrontation. The situation remains fluid, and all eyes are on the next steps from both the House leadership and the Lagos State government.

As the leadership crisis continues to simmer, the implications for the future of governance in Lagos State remain uncertain. While Meranda’s supporters believe the vote of confidence has solidified her position as Speaker, critics argue that the turbulence within the Assembly could hinder the legislative body’s ability to function effectively. The full extent of the impact on governance in Lagos State may not be clear until the Assembly reconvenes, and lawmakers address the root causes of the ongoing crisis.
