Lagos Set to Complete Mile 2 and Marina Interchange Hubs in 13 Months to Ease Congestion

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the Mile 2 and Marina transport interchange hubs will be completed within the next 13 months. The construction, which started in July 2024, is part of the government’s broader effort to enhance the city’s transport network and alleviate commuter congestion.

These hubs are central to the Lagos Strategic Transport Masterplan (STMP), which aims to integrate various modes of transport—road, rail, water, and non-motorized transport—into a seamless network. Once completed, the hubs will serve as key transfer points, allowing commuters to easily switch between different transport modes.

LAMATA Managing Director, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, reinforced the government’s commitment during a recent inspection. She emphasized the project’s alignment with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of making public transportation the preferred choice for Lagosians. The Marina and Mile 2 interchanges are vital to this vision, providing much-needed connectivity.

“These interchanges are part of the 13 identified in the Lagos Strategic Transport Masterplan (STMP), and LAMATA is committed to delivering these two hubs within the next 13 months,” the statement shared on LAMATA’s X (formerly Twitter) page noted.

Akinajo also assured that all stakeholders, including contractors and consultants, are collaborating to ensure the timely completion of the project.

The construction of these interchanges is funded through a credit from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), with counterpart funds from the Lagos State Government. AFD’s Country Director for Nigeria, Mr. Xavier Muron, highlighted that the investment is aimed at tackling long-standing challenges related to first- and last-mile connectivity.

Once completed, the hubs are expected to transform Lagos’ transportation landscape. They will ease congestion, improve the overall commuter experience, and contribute to the city’s long-term economic growth by enhancing the mobility of residents and businesses.
