The Lagos State Government (LASG) has intensified efforts to enhance the performance of students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has directed the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) to closely monitor schools below the tertiary level to ensure improved results.
At a recent management meeting in Alausa, Ikeja, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, Remi Abdul, underscored the need for effective monitoring. He stated that evaluators must ensure the punctuality and regularity of both students and teachers, while also enforcing government directives. Abdul highlighted the importance of early morning and afternoon lessons, as well as Saturday intervention classes, to boost academic performance.
As part of the new initiative, evaluators will visit schools every Thursday to monitor afternoon lessons and check the progress of morning sessions during resumption. Abdul further emphasized that students who do not attend intervention classes would not be registered for the WASSCE, and teachers must demonstrate greater commitment to their responsibilities.
So far, 109 schools have been visited, with plans to monitor all schools in the state to ensure the desired academic results.
