Police in Mumbai have arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad in connection with the recent knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident occurred last week at Khan’s residence, leaving the star with multiple stab wounds.
Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national allegedly staying in India illegally, was arrested in Thane, on the outskirts of Mumbai. Authorities suggest that he intended to rob the actor during the attack. Shehzad had reportedly been residing in Mumbai for six months, working under a false identity at a housekeeping agency. A Mumbai court has ordered him into police custody for five days.
The attack, which took place in the dead of night, saw Shehzad wielding a wooden object and a knife, demanding ₹10 million (approximately $115,477) from the actor. A scuffle broke out, resulting in Khan sustaining six stab wounds, including a near-fatal injury to his neck. Khan underwent surgery following the assault, and his wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, along with their children, were unharmed.
Eliyama Philip, a nurse employed at Khan’s home, confirmed that Shehzad had entered the house and attacked Khan, with the intruder fleeing after the incident. While the police initially detained and later released five individuals after CCTV footage captured the suspect, Shehzad’s lawyer, Sandeep Shikhane, has denied the allegations, calling his client a “scapegoat” and questioning his nationality.
The incident has raised significant concerns about security in Mumbai, especially for high-profile individuals like Khan.
