Mikel Obi reacts to allegations of Mourinho being racist

Mikel made these remarks on his podcast while reacting to a statement by Turkish club Galatasaray, which threatened legal action against Mourinho. The controversy erupted following a heated 0-0 draw between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, during which Mourinho allegedly described the Galatasaray bench as “jumping around like monkeys.”

Galatasaray officials condemned the remark and hinted at pursuing legal action, stating that such comments had no place in modern football. The club’s statement sparked outrage in some quarters, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.

However, Mikel, who played under Mourinho during his time at Chelsea, strongly rejected the claims and expressed disbelief at the accusation. He emphasized that the Portuguese coach has always treated African players with dignity and fairness.

“For them to label our African dad (José Mourinho) a racist, for me, that’s a f** joke. That’s a f** joke,” Mikel said.

He praised Mourinho’s character and described him as someone who is honest and treats everyone equally, regardless of race or background.

“José Mourinho is somebody that loves everybody. A beautiful, beautiful human being you can ever meet. The straightest, the most straightforward human being you can ever meet in your life. He says it as it is,” Mikel added.

The former Chelsea midfielder also highlighted Mourinho’s close relationship with several African footballers, including Didier Drogba and Michael Essien. He recalled how the coach supported and nurtured African players during his managerial career, treating them like family.

“Didier Drogba, Michael Essien… He loved us as his own children. So, for me, this comment, this situation, I don’t even want to get into it because it’s baseless,” Mikel emphasized.

Mikel suggested that the controversy was part of a broader political agenda within Turkish football. He expressed concern that the allegations were being used to tarnish Mourinho’s reputation without credible evidence.

“This is politics in football in Turkey,” he said, implying that the accusations were more about rivalry and less about genuine concerns over racism.

Mourinho, known for his outspoken personality and passionate sideline behavior, has yet to directly respond to Galatasaray’s legal threats. Meanwhile, the Turkish Football Federation is under pressure to address the allegations and ensure fair proceedings.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Mikel Obi remains firm in his support for his former coach, insisting that Mourinho’s record and personal relationships speak louder than the accusations against him.
