“One Night Guest” is a Nollywood and Ghallywood collaboration that brings together a talented cast of actors for a Christmas family comedy-drama. Directed by Peter Sedufia, the film stars Akah Nnani, Anita Asuoha, Annabel Apara, Chidi Mokeme, Ini Edo, James Gardiner, Lasisi Elenu, Majid Michel, Roselyn Ngissah, and Yvonne Okoro, among others.
The movie revolves around a father who goes the extra mile to ensure his mute daughter, who is confined to a wheelchair after her mother’s death, enjoys the Christmas season. To make it special, he hires Santa Claus and an Elf to visit their home every year. However, this particular Christmas brings unexpected drama, including thieves who target the family for a robbery.
While the movie has its share of highs and lows, it ultimately attempts to capture the spirit of a Hollywood-style family comedy. However, it does feel somewhat like an imitation of classic American films, specifically “Home Alone.” It lacks a certain level of originality and falls short of offering something entirely fresh.
One of the strongest aspects of the film is the set design. The beautiful painting and detailed Christmas decorations, especially in the house where most of the scenes are shot, provide a vibrant backdrop. The costumes of Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the Elf are also impressive, adding to the festive atmosphere. A fun twist in the story is the use of different actors portraying Santa Claus and Elves, all vying for a prize, which adds a humorous dynamic to the plot.
The acting is generally decent, though some of the performers, who are better known for their comedic skits, may not be as natural in their roles. That said, Majid Michel’s portrayal of an Elf is a refreshing departure from his usual roles, and Lasisi Elenu truly shines, bringing a charm that lifts the film despite its flaws.
Visually, the movie is not particularly striking. The color grading is somewhat flat, with outdoor scenes lacking the contrast one might expect from a holiday film. The lighting is inconsistent, with some indoor shots looking great while outdoor daylight scenes fall short. On the plus side, the soundtrack gives a local twist to Christmas classics, providing a unique flavor to the holiday music.
“One Night Guest” is a movie that will undoubtedly become a holiday staple, offering a lighthearted option for families to watch together while celebrating Christmas. However, its appeal may not extend beyond the holiday season, as it doesn’t quite capture the universal charm needed for year-round enjoyment.
Though the movie could have benefited from a larger focus on children to make it more marketable to a younger audience, it still manages to deliver a fun, family-friendly experience. While I give “One Night Guest” a 5/10, I recommend it for those looking for a festive, heartwarming film to enjoy with loved ones during the holiday season.
