MTN Group has completed the sale of its operations in Guinea (MTN Guinea-Conakry) to the State of Guinea. The deal was finalized on December 30, 2024, as part of MTN’s portfolio optimization and simplification strategy under its Ambition 2025 goals.
MTN Group President and CEO, Ralph Mupita, expressed gratitude for the support received from staff, customers, regulators, and stakeholders in Guinea. He emphasized that the sale aligns with MTN’s strategy to focus on markets with greater growth potential and simplify its portfolio.
Earlier in 2024, Mupita explained that smaller markets, like Guinea, presented challenges that made them subscale and difficult to grow. The operator had previously disclosed its decision to sell its equity interests in both Guinea-Conakry and Guinea-Bissau to Telecel, an African telecom operator. These businesses were classified as “held for sale” by MTN as of December 31, 2023.
Telecel is seen as a suitable entity to drive growth and technological advancement in these markets.
