NAFDAC Warns 14.3 Million Nigerians Struggling with Drug Abuse, Urges Immediate Action

The alarming statistics surrounding drug abuse in Nigeria have reached critical levels, with a staggering 14.3 million Nigerians currently grappling with substance abuse, according to the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye. This shocking revelation underscores the growing public health crisis and its devastating impact on families, communities, and the nation’s socio-economic development.

During the inaugural ceremony of NAFDAC’s youth program, “Catch Them Young,” held at Government Secondary School, Rumuokwuta in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Prof. Adeyeye disclosed the stark reality of drug-related issues in the country. Highlighting the disturbing trends, NAFDAC’s research found that one in four high-risk drug users has been arrested for various drug-related offenses. These offenses span across a spectrum of criminal activities, with 73% linked to drug possession, 12% for theft, 5% for sex work, 4% for burglary, and 2% for shoplifting.

However, Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that these figures only account for reported arrests. “Given that a significant portion of crimes related to drug abuse go unreported, the true extent of the problem is likely far worse,” she said, drawing attention to the hidden scope of the epidemic.

The consequences of this crisis are far-reaching. Drug abuse is not only ravaging individuals but also undermining the social fabric and hindering the nation’s economic progress. Families are torn apart, youth are losing their potential, and communities are sinking deeper into despair. To address this, NAFDAC has launched an impactful program targeting secondary school students, aiming to curb the increasing trend of substance abuse at its roots.

“This initiative isn’t designed to scare anyone,” Prof. Adeyeye clarified. “Instead, it serves to open a dialogue about the dangers of illicit drug use, including alcohol consumption. We want young Nigerians to understand the severe consequences of drug abuse and make informed decisions that could safeguard their future.”

The initiative, which focuses on secondary schools, was introduced to address the vulnerability of young people, who are often at risk of falling into the cycle of substance abuse. Mr. Onogwu Emmanuel, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC in Rivers, explained that secondary school students are at a pivotal stage of their lives, making this educational intervention crucial for the country’s long-term prosperity. “We must educate the next generation of leaders about the dangers of drugs before it’s too late,” he emphasized.

The program’s pilot phase will target two schools from each of the state’s three senatorial zones, setting the stage for broader expansion. Local leaders have expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing its importance for the well-being of Nigeria’s youth. Gladys Iheumamme, the principal of the host school, applauded NAFDAC’s efforts and urged the agency to continue its vital work. “This initiative is essential for the future of our youth. We must ensure its continuity and expansion to save lives and protect our country’s future,” she stated.

This report brings attention to one of Nigeria’s most pressing public health challenges. While the figures are staggering, NAFDAC’s proactive approach through education, community involvement, and open dialogue provides a ray of hope in the battle against drug abuse. With continuous efforts and support from both the government and society, the fight against drug addiction in Nigeria can be won.
