The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of 284 suspects and the seizure of over 5.2 million kilograms of illicit drugs in Kogi State between January and December 2024. Additionally, the agency confiscated counterfeit currency worth $2 million and N20.4 million during the same period.
The NDLEA Commander in Kogi State, Mustapha Yahuza, disclosed these figures during a press conference held in Lokoja, the state capital, on Monday. Yahuza also revealed that 10 hectares of marijuana plantations were destroyed as part of the agency’s extensive operations against drug abuse and trafficking.
Highlighting the achievements as a significant milestone, Yahuza attributed the success to the dedication and professionalism of NDLEA personnel despite numerous challenges. He commended his team for their commitment to combating substance abuse and illicit drug trade in the state.
Among the confiscated drugs were Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, Exol-5, Cocaine, Codeine, Heroin, and even dangerous substances like Nitrous Oxide and Pethidine Injection. Yahuza further noted that 91 individuals have been convicted, while many cases are still under trial at the Federal High Court in Lokoja.
Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA has prioritized prevention and education, sensitizing 51 schools and organizations on the dangers of drug abuse. The agency also provided counseling to 195 individuals referred through its investigation units as part of its drug demand reduction initiatives.
Yahuza issued a stern warning against the consumption and trafficking of hard drugs, emphasizing their devastating impact on individuals, communities, and the nation. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining its efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking across the state.
The seized drugs and counterfeit currency have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
