Nigeria and Belgium are set to deepen their economic collaboration to enhance food security, according to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Manga, revealed that the agreement followed a meeting between Edun and the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt. The meeting focused on boosting cooperation in agriculture and food security.
During the discussions, Edun highlighted Nigeria’s improving economic outlook, citing a reduction in inflation, greater price stability, and increased savings in the federation account. He emphasized that the Nigerian government remains committed to supporting farmers through sustainable policies aimed at increasing agricultural productivity.
“The government continues to provide increasing support for farmers through sustainable policies to boost agricultural productivity,” Edun said, reiterating President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to key macroeconomic reforms.
Ambassador Leenknegt expressed Belgium’s interest in strengthening economic ties with Nigeria, emphasizing the mutual benefits of such collaboration.
“This meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening economic ties between Nigeria and Belgium. The two countries will continue to explore opportunities for cooperation,” Leenknegt stated.
The partnership comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to diversify its economy and improve food production to address rising food insecurity. Both countries have pledged to explore further opportunities for mutual growth and sustainable agricultural development.
