Nigeria Customs Seizes 245,370 Litres of Smuggled Petrol Worth N238.1 Million

The Nigeria Customs Service has intensified its crackdown on fuel smuggling as ‘Operation Whirlwind’ intercepted 245,370 litres of petrol worth N238.1 million in less than three months. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, made this known on Monday during a press conference in Lagos, highlighting the agency’s relentless efforts to curb illegal fuel exports that threaten the country’s economic stability.

Speaking at the Federal Operations Unit in Ikeja, Adeniyi stressed that the seizures were part of a broader campaign to prevent the diversion of subsidized petroleum products to neighboring countries. He acknowledged the role of Customs officers, particularly the leader of the operation, Hussein Ejibuno, for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s economy and national security.

Smuggling of petroleum products remains a persistent challenge due to significant price disparities between Nigeria and its neighboring nations. Adeniyi noted that this price difference fuels a thriving black market, leading to revenue losses, domestic fuel scarcity, and market instability. He reaffirmed the agency’s determination to dismantle the networks responsible for siphoning fuel out of the country.

The latest crackdown builds on previous seizures recorded under Operation Whirlwind. On January 30, customs officers intercepted 199,495 litres of petrol in Adamawa State, valued at N199.5 million. Similarly, on February 17, another 45,875 litres worth N38.6 million were confiscated in Kwara State. These operations, Adeniyi said, demonstrate the agency’s strategic approach to tackling the illegal trade, especially in border regions where fuel smuggling is most rampant.

The customs chief emphasized that the figures announced on Monday do not include additional seizures made by regular command structures and federal operations units across the country. He assured Nigerians that the service would continue its enforcement actions, ensuring that government policies meant to benefit citizens are not exploited by smugglers for personal gain.

The steady momentum of Operation Whirlwind has been particularly evident in Zone A, covering Lagos and Ogun, where customs officers have significantly disrupted smuggling activities. As authorities tighten their grip on illicit fuel exports, Adeniyi urged the public to support efforts aimed at protecting Nigeria’s economic sovereignty and ensuring fuel availability for citizens.
