The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong warning to officers misusing the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for fraudulent activities.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed concern over the persistent misconduct by some officers, which he noted tarnishes the image of the force and erodes public trust.
The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the unprofessional actions of certain officers, which undermine our standards and reputation, the statement read.
Adejobi highlighted that some officers exploit the IGP’s name to intimidate victims and perpetrate illegal acts, misleading victims into believing that these actions have official approval.
This tactic often discourages victims from reporting incidents to higher authorities, he stated, adding that such behavior would not be tolerated.
He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of misconduct to the appropriate channels, including the Complaint Response Units or the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.
Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when approached by anyone claiming connections with the IGP or senior officers to gain influence or favors, Adejobi advised.
This warning follows a similar alert issued in October, underscoring the NPF’s commitment to addressing corruption and maintaining its integrity.
