The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), has apprehended nine individuals suspected of crude oil theft in Akwa Ibom State. The arrests occurred near a wellhead approximately 26 nautical miles offshore within the Eastern Naval Command’s jurisdiction.
Commodore Abubakar Umar, Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Jubilee in Ikot Abasi, announced the operation during a press briefing. He credited the success to joint intelligence efforts between the Navy, DSS, and security teams from oil operators. The operation involved coordinated maritime patrols utilizing naval ships and air assets.
This initiative aligns with ‘Operation Delta Sanity 2,’ launched on December 30, 2024, by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. The operation aims to combat crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, smuggling, sea robbery, and piracy in Nigeria’s eastern maritime region, thereby enhancing the nation’s crude oil production.
Commodore Umar emphasized the Navy’s commitment to eradicating maritime-related crimes and warned individuals involved in economic sabotage to desist, stating that the Navy is prepared to take decisive action against such activities. The arrested suspects are currently under investigation and will face legal proceedings if found culpable.
