NNPC and First E&P Achieve 96% Reduction in Gas Flaring at Anyala and Madu Oil Fields

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) have successfully reduced routine gas flaring by an impressive 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) oil fields. This achievement marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change.

In a statement released on Thursday, NNPC Ltd. described this development as a significant stride in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the country’s environmental protection goals. The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, highlighted that this milestone aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, a global treaty aimed at limiting global warming and reducing carbon emissions.

The remarkable reduction was achieved through an innovative associated gas reinjection strategy at the Madu field, located offshore Bayelsa State. This strategy involves capturing the gas that would otherwise have been flared and safely storing it in designated underground reservoirs. This not only minimizes environmental pollution but also promotes more efficient resource management.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mele Kyari, praised the achievement, describing it as a testament to the company’s dedication to responsible resource management and sustainability.

“This achievement underscores our commitment to leveraging resources responsibly and optimizing production to meet energy needs and sustainability goals. It reflects our dedication to aligning our operations with global standards and environmental best practices,” Kyari stated.

Echoing Kyari’s sentiments, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of First E&P, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, emphasized the company’s strong focus on environmental sustainability.

“This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible energy production. By substantially reducing our carbon footprint, we are contributing to a sustainable energy future that benefits both the environment and the communities we serve,” Adeyemi-Bero said.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in tackling environmental challenges. The collaboration between NNPC Ltd. and First E&P showcases how joint ventures in the energy sector can drive significant environmental impact while maintaining energy production goals.

The gas flaring reduction initiative fully complies with the regulatory frameworks established by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). This compliance reinforces the joint venture’s commitment to adhering to national environmental standards and aligns its operations with global best practices.

The success of this project not only reduces Nigeria’s carbon footprint but also sets a benchmark for other oil and gas companies operating in the country. It highlights the importance of integrating environmental sustainability into core business operations, especially in resource-dependent industries.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with the dual challenges of meeting its energy demands and addressing climate change, initiatives like this serve as a beacon of hope. The significant reduction in gas flaring at Anyala and Madu fields reflects the country’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

With continuous efforts and innovative strategies, Nigeria is steadily moving towards achieving its climate goals while fostering economic growth and energy security.
