The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) have successfully reduced routine gas flaring by an impressive 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) oil fields. This achievement marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change.
In a statement released on Thursday, NNPC Ltd. described this development as a significant stride in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the country’s environmental protection goals. The Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, highlighted that this milestone aligns with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, a global treaty aimed at limiting global warming and reducing carbon emissions.
The remarkable reduction was achieved through an innovative associated gas reinjection strategy at the Madu field, located offshore Bayelsa State. This strategy involves capturing the gas that would otherwise have been flared and safely storing it in designated underground reservoirs. The Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mele Kyari, praised the achievement, describing it as a testament to the company’s dedication to responsible resource management and sustainability.
