The Arewa Think Tank (ATT), a Northern group, has shown strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s directive to end banditry by 2025. Muhammad Yakubu, the group’s convener, called the order a positive step. It has reignited hope in the government’s ability to fight insecurity.
Yakubu shared that Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, confirmed the directive during a meeting with APC members. Matawalle assured that the military would take action to end banditry.
“We are pleased with the President’s leadership,” Yakubu said. He also praised the allocation of the largest share of the 2025 budget to defense. This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to national security.
Yakubu believes the Federal Government will deploy more troops and military equipment to the North-West and other troubled areas. He is confident this will strengthen the military’s efforts.
However, Yakubu emphasized the need to address the issue of informants aiding bandits. He urged the government to act decisively. “The real challenge is dealing with informants,” he said.
Yakubu also warned politicians not to use security issues for political gain. He believes such actions weaken the military’s resolve. Informants, he said, often come from local communities and hinder the fight against insecurity.
Despite these challenges, Yakubu remains optimistic. He urged Nigerians to give the President two years to implement his plan. “By the time the President reaches his second year, Nigerians may have no choice but to commend his efforts,” he said.
The ATT’s support reflects growing hope in the Northern region. With a clear focus on military action and addressing internal challenges, the directive could help reduce banditry and improve security across Nigeria.
