The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has transferred oversight of Ogun State’s electricity market to the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGERC). This move follows a similar transfer for Lagos State.
The shift is part of the new Electricity Act 2023, which allows states to manage their local energy markets. Ogun State met the requirements and requested the transfer.
NERC’s order requires major electricity companies, including Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric Plc, and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, to set up subsidiaries for intrastate distribution. These companies must apply for licences from OGERC.
The transfer must be completed by June 23, 2025. The changes aim to give states more control over their electricity sectors, while NERC will still oversee inter-state and international electricity operations.
