Political activist and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Comrade Usman Austin Okai, has called on the National Assembly to prioritize the passage of long-overdue tax reform bills, stressing their critical importance for Nigeria’s economic development.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Okai urged lawmakers to set aside political differences and act in the nation’s best interest by passing comprehensive tax reform legislation. He emphasized the necessity of a fair, transparent, and effective tax system that can generate substantial revenue to fund infrastructure projects and social services.
This is not the time for political correctness or hesitation. Nigeria urgently needs a reformed tax system to establish a robust revenue base for sustainable development, Okai said.
The activist’s appeal aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s push for sweeping tax reforms aimed at boosting revenue generation and ensuring equitable tax treatment for all Nigerians. Tinubu’s administration has consistently highlighted the need for a tax overhaul as part of its economic recovery plan.
Okai also urged lawmakers and stakeholders opposing the reforms to reconsider their stance, underscoring the pressing need for unity and collaboration to achieve the greater good.
We must bury our political differences and work together for the nation’s benefit,” he added. “These reforms are essential, not just for fiscal stability but for the growth and prosperity of every Nigerian.
As the call for reforms gains traction, Okai’s message amplifies the urgency of creating a tax system that fosters accountability and transparency while ensuring fairness across all socioeconomic classes.
The activist concluded by rallying support for the reforms, expressing optimism that with collective effort and leadership, the National Assembly can adopt the bills swiftly to usher in a new era of financial stability and growth for Nigeria.
