The political tension in Osun State continues to rise as Governor Ademola Adeleke finds himself at the center of a heated controversy. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has recently accused the state government of secretly acquiring a foreign loan worth $51 million, approximately N81.6 billion. This claim was made during an end-of-the-year press conference in Osogbo, where Kola Olabisi, the APC’s Director of Media and Information, accused the Governor of financial recklessness that could jeopardize the future of Osun State.
The APC’s accusations come with serious implications, asserting that the state’s finances are being mishandled to line the pockets of a few at the expense of the masses. According to Olabisi, the state’s financial transparency is in question, with the opposition calling for a full disclosure of Osun’s financial records. The APC’s spokesperson emphasized that the state’s 2024 budget includes provisions linked to the controversial NG-CARES facility, which the party believes is a veiled attempt to cover up loan agreements.
However, Governor Adeleke’s office has swiftly refuted these claims. Olawale Rasheed, the Governor’s spokesperson, firmly denied the accusation that Osun has taken out any foreign loans under the NG-CARES program. “This is fake news,” Rasheed declared, highlighting that no loan approval requests have been made during the Governor’s tenure. He further stressed that the people of Osun are aware of their government’s actions and would not be misled by what he described as politically motivated fabrications.
The allegations have ignited a fierce debate, with Osun residents caught in the crossfire. As the state heads into a new year, the question of financial integrity and transparency remains at the forefront of political discussions. With both parties standing firm in their positions, the people of Osun are left to navigate the uncertain waters of political rhetoric and fiscal responsibility.
