A violent protest erupted on Friday at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State following the alleged killing of a 400-level student, Sa’id Abdulkadir, by a security operative in Dutsin-Ma town.
The incident, which sparked widespread anger, was confirmed in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on Sunday.
According to reports, Abdulkadir, a student in the Faculty of Agriculture, was shot by members of the Joint Task Force (JTF) after he and a commercial motorcycle rider allegedly failed to stop at a security checkpoint.
Eyewitnesses said the security personnel opened fire when the motorcycle refused to stop, killing Abdulkadir instantly. The motorcycle rider sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The killing triggered an immediate reaction from students, who poured into the streets in protest. They blocked the Dutsin-Ma–Katsina highway, burned tires, and disrupted traffic, demanding justice for their slain colleague.
Conflicting accounts have emerged surrounding the circumstances of Abdulkadir’s death. While some sources claim he was suspected of being an informant for bandits, others insist he was an innocent student caught in a tragic mistake.
As tensions escalated, security forces, including soldiers and police officers, were deployed to restore order and disperse the protesting students. Despite their efforts, the demonstration continued for hours, with students refusing to back down until their demands were heard.
The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the JTF officer responsible for the shooting. Security has also been tightened in the area to prevent further unrest.
The killing has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for a transparent investigation and accountability. Meanwhile, the university community remains on edge as students and residents demand justice and answers.
