Oyo Tragedy: See Why Ebonyi Canceled Makinde’s Birthday Lecture and Book Launch?

    Published on

Ebonyi and South-East leaders canceled a birthday lecture and book launch planned for Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde. The event, scheduled in Abakaliki, was called off after 35 children died in a tragic incident in Ibadan on Wednesday.

Governor Makinde and his Ebonyi counterpart, Francis Nwifuru, were set to attend. Former Senator Ben Obi was billed as the guest lecturer. However, Ali Odefa, the chief organizer, announced the cancellation to the gathered audience, citing the tragedy.

Odefa said Governor Makinde had prepared to attend but decided to mourn with the grieving families. He emphasized that celebrating while Oyo mourned would be insensitive. He noted the pain the incident caused and its lasting impact on affected families.

Former Governor Sam Egwu supported the decision. He explained it was wrong to host an event while parents and Oyo State grieved. Egwu said the leaders chose solidarity over celebration.

The organizers observed a minute of silence for the victims. They promised to reschedule the event and notify attendees of the new date. Egwu urged Nigerians to mourn with Oyo and support the grieving families.

The tragic event has left the nation united in grief, showing the importance of compassion during loss.
