An alarming incident on the Elizabeth line at Ealing Broadway station has prompted an urgent investigation after a passenger’s hand became trapped in a train door, forcing them to run alongside the moving train. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on November 24, and the passenger suffered minor injuries.
The train, which moved approximately 17 meters before stopping, was alerted by vigilant rail users. A staff member on the platform intervened to free the passenger. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has launched an inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the event, including the actions of those involved and the safety protocols in place.
Transport for London (TfL) expressed regret over the distress caused and emphasized its commitment to improving operational safety. The operator, MTR-Elizabeth line, is also conducting a detailed investigation, fully cooperating with the RAIB to uncover the root cause and prevent similar incidents.
The Elizabeth line, which has been operational since May 2022, has faced previous concerns about passenger safety. Notably, the gap between the platform and trains at Ealing Broadway has been flagged as a hazard. In July, multiple passengers reported injuries linked to the platform gap, prompting an apology from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who vowed corrective measures.
This incident is not an isolated case. In June 2023, the RAIB investigated two separate occurrences on the London Underground where passengers were dragged along platforms after their clothing became trapped in train doors. Following those events, recommendations were made to reduce risks, including implementing advanced door-detection technology and modifying door seals.
TfL has pledged ongoing improvements to enhance safety, such as infrastructure upgrades, advanced technology trials, and enhanced training for staff and train operators. Meanwhile, concerns remain about the Elizabeth line’s design and safety features, with critics calling for swift action to address known risks.
As the investigation continues, this incident underscores the critical importance of passenger safety on public transit systems and the need for innovative solutions to prevent future mishaps.
