Speaking to his congregation in Akure on Sunday, Pastor Giwa expressed concern over how youths have misused these platforms, which he believes were intended to spread the gospel of Christ.
Pastor Giwa, who emphasized the importance of spreading the word of God in the modern world, lamented that many are now using social media for selfish and materialistic purposes. He noted that the teachings of Christ instructed his followers to go ye into the world and preach the gospel, a mission he believes should also extend to platforms like social media. However, he pointed out that many have strayed from this calling, using these channels for personal gain rather than to share the truth of Christ.
The pastor highlighted alarming examples, such as married women posting revealing photos of themselves on platforms like TikTok and Facebook, questioning whether such actions aligned with Christian values. Are they propagating the word of God? he asked. No, they are just advertising themselves to the world.
According to Pastor Giwa, this shift in social media usage signals a deeper spiritual concern. He believes the pervasive negativity and distractions found on these platforms are a manifestation of evil forces at work. He warned that anything one cannot control becomes dangerous, and for the youth, the current state of social media use is both damaging and detrimental to their spiritual lives.
The pastor also raised concerns about individuals who post worldly content, such as secular music or other distractions, attracting large followings. He urged his followers to reflect on the purpose of their online presence, asking, What are you using your page for? Are you using it to spread the message of Jesus Christ or to destroy other people’s lives?
In closing, Pastor Giwa made it clear that God will hold individuals accountable for how they use their influence, especially those with millions of followers. If you don’t use your platform to propagate the gospel, God will ask you tomorrow, he warned, urging believers to take responsibility for their actions in the digital space.
