Controversial suspended RCCG Pastor Idowu Iluyomade has officially opened his new church, Family Fellowship, in Victoria Island, Lagos, igniting a wave of reactions across the internet. The former senior pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s City of David Parish had been under scrutiny following a lavish celebration for his wife’s 60th birthday, which many deemed insensitive, especially after the tragic death of businessman Wigwe in a helicopter crash. The incident led to his suspension from RCCG, which also replaced him with Pastor Charles Kpandei as the leader of the parish.
Now, Iluyomade has made a bold move by launching his own ministry. Videos from the church service on January 19th show the clergyman joyfully dancing with members of his new congregation as they praised God. However, a noticeable absence in the footage was his wife, Siju Iluyomade, which has fueled further speculation and debate.
The reactions to Iluyomade’s new church have been mixed, with many expressing disappointment, while others are voicing support. “This one has no remorse whatsoever,” one commenter, Ayinke Ade, remarked, highlighting the controversial nature of the pastor’s actions. Others, like Ogboye Official, defended the pastor’s move, saying, “Called by God, suspended by man. Una well done,” suggesting a belief in his divine calling despite his suspension.
However, many online observers have criticized the venture, accusing Iluyomade of turning the church into a business center. “Business must continue,” Emelda Ifeme2 wrote, while others, like Jarvis Olamide, remarked on how churches in Nigeria have increasingly become places where money is prioritized over faith. The sentiment that church practices are shifting from spiritual to financial motives was echoed by Precious Capable, who pointed out, “Business must be made.”
Despite the backlash, some continue to defend Iluyomade’s decision to establish his own church, noting that many are drawn to the teachings and influence of charismatic leaders. But for others, the spectacle surrounding his new ministry only adds to the ongoing debate over the commercialization of religion in the country.
As reactions continue to pour in, it is clear that the launch of Family Fellowship will not be without controversy, but it certainly has added fuel to the ongoing conversation about the role of faith and business in Nigerian churches.
