Peter Obi Donates ₦10 Million to Ebonyi Nursing College and Pledges Support for Healthcare Training

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system by investing in medical education and infrastructure. During a visit to Mater Misericordiae College of Nursing Sciences in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Obi donated ₦10 million to support the institution’s infrastructural development and enhance the training of future healthcare professionals.

His gesture underscores the urgent need for investment in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, particularly in training skilled medical personnel to address the country’s growing health challenges. Addressing the students and faculty, Obi emphasized that healthcare remains a fundamental pillar of national development. He commended the institution’s longstanding contribution to the training of medical practitioners, acknowledging its impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system over the decades.

“Healthcare is a fundamental indicator of human development,” Obi stated. “The role of nurses and medical practitioners in national progress cannot be overstated. Without a strong healthcare system, no country can truly thrive.”

Established in 1946, Mater Misericordiae College of Nursing Sciences is one of Nigeria’s pioneering healthcare institutions. The school’s nursing and midwifery programs, founded in 1952 and 1953, respectively, have produced generations of skilled medical professionals serving both within and outside Nigeria. Today, the institution accommodates approximately 1,000 students and continues to undergo infrastructural upgrades to meet evolving healthcare demands.

Obi’s donation is aimed at reinforcing the college’s capacity to provide high-quality education to nursing students, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute effectively to the nation’s health sector. He lauded the efforts of the school’s administration and teaching staff for their unwavering dedication to grooming healthcare professionals.

Furthermore, Obi recognized the collaborative efforts between the institution and the Ebonyi State Government, describing their partnership as essential for sustainable growth in the state’s healthcare system. He urged both public and private stakeholders to prioritize investments in education and healthcare, as these sectors hold the key to national development.

“I appreciate the Ebonyi State Government for working with the school in the shared interest of the state and the nation,” Obi remarked. “Healthcare education should not be left in the hands of institutions alone; the government and private sector must work together to build a stronger system.”

Encouraging students to remain focused on their studies, Obi cited the increasing global demand for healthcare professionals. He pointed out that Nigeria has the potential to become a major exporter of skilled medical workers if proper investments are made in training and capacity-building initiatives.

“With more investment in healthcare education, we can build a stronger system that meets both national and international needs,” he said. “The demand for qualified medical professionals is rising globally, and Nigeria can take advantage of this by producing top-tier healthcare workers.”

Obi’s visit and generous contribution align with his broader vision for a reformed Nigeria, where education and healthcare are prioritized as key drivers of national progress. He concluded his visit with a call for collective efforts to build a better Nigeria, reaffirming his popular slogan: “A new Nigeria is possible.”

His donation to Mater Misericordiae College is the latest in a series of interventions aimed at supporting education and healthcare institutions across the country. Over the years, Obi has consistently championed policies that promote human capital development, believing that investing in people is the most effective way to transform the nation’s future.

As Nigeria continues to face healthcare challenges, including a shortage of medical personnel, Obi’s contribution serves as a call to action for other political and business leaders to invest in strengthening the nation’s health education system. With the right infrastructure, funding, and policy direction, Nigeria’s healthcare sector has the potential to thrive and compete on a global scale.
