A devastating attack by unknown gunmen in Gidan Ado, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, claimed the lives of 14 people on Sunday night. The victims, identified as natives of the Irigwe community in Bassa LGA, were ambushed despite recent police deployments aimed at ensuring security during the festive season.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Community Development Association (IDA), Mr. Sam Jugo, confirmed the tragic incident and stated that the attack occurred just two days after the Plateau State Police Command intensified security measures across five local government areas, including Riyom. Troops from Operation Safe Haven, a multi-security task force in the state, responded to the attack but were unable to prevent the heavy casualty toll.
Among the victims were men, women, and children, with ages ranging from 1 to 52 years. Those killed include Dauda Arabo (48), Hassana Wula (52), Basuna Moses (22), Faith Basuna (19), Laraba Randi (18), Danlami Gado (50), Moses Yakubu (48), and others. One survivor, Linda Moses (32), sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed location.
Mr. Jugo expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and called on the security agencies to act decisively to prevent further violence and potential reprisals. “Our hearts bleed for the demise of our kinsmen, whom we hoped to celebrate this yuletide season with. Their lives were tragically cut short,” he lamented.
The spokespersons for Operation Safe Haven and the Plateau State Police Command, Major Samson Zhakom and DSP Alabo Alfred, respectively, have yet to provide comments on the incident as of press time.
The attack has reignited concerns about insecurity in Plateau State, with calls for intensified efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring perpetrators to justice. As the yuletide season approaches, residents are appealing for urgent and effective security measures to ensure their safety.
