The 2nd edition of the African Table Tennis in Diaspora (ATTD) tournament, currently taking place at the Table Tennis section of the Ibadan Recreation Club, has garnered widespread praise from players and officials for the sponsors and organizers behind the event.
Matthew Kuti, the defending champion, expressed his gratitude to the sponsors, highlighting the importance of their support for young players. He encouraged the sponsors to continue their support in the coming year as he aims to defend his title. Kuti’s commitment to the tournament is a testament to how such events foster growth and competition within the sport.
Muizz Adegoke, ranked second nationally, echoed Kuti’s sentiments, calling the tournament a valuable opportunity for young players to grow and gain critical points. Adegoke also urged for more tournaments like this to be organized in the country, pushing for greater opportunities for players to develop their skills and make their mark on the sport.
Tayo Adesoji, Vice President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation and Technical Director, praised the initiative, stressing that the tournament provided exactly what Nigerian players needed at this time. He emphasized that true achievement lies in giving back to the community, and expressed his appreciation for the diaspora’s efforts to help young talents in Nigeria.
This tournament is a step in the right direction, Adesoji said. It’s about recreating oneself and offering future players the opportunity to rise above their circumstances. This is the foundation for future success.
As the tournament nears its conclusion, Kuti is determined to defend his title, while Adegoke and other players aim to challenge him for the top spot. The event has been a platform for Nigeria’s burgeoning talent, further highlighting the need for more investment in local competitions and player development.
