The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested one of its officers seen in a viral video involved in the abuse of Nigeria’s local currency, the naira.
In the video, which gained widespread attention, the officer was filmed alongside a businessman, identified as Chief Okoya, during the incident where the naira was mishandled. The footage, shared by Okoya’s family members, led to public outrage.
In a statement posted on the police’s official Facebook page, NPF confirmed the identification and detention of the officer involved. The statement emphasized that the officer’s actions were unethical and condemned the involvement of law enforcement in such practices.
“The policeman captured in the recent viral video where the naira was abused has been identified and detained for disciplinary action. The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical,” the statement read.
While the police have acted swiftly to detain the officer, it remains unclear whether the businessman, Chief Okoya, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his role in the incident.
