Police Arrest Three Suspects for Vandalising Transformer Cables in Adamawa

Security operatives in Adamawa have apprehended three individuals allegedly involved in the vandalism and theft of transformer cables in Wuro Dole, Girei Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as Rabiu Ali (28), Muhammad Musa (42), and Abubakar Usman (18), were arrested following credible intelligence that linked them to the crime. The police command spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, revealing that the trio conspired with three other accomplices who are currently on the run.

The arrest was made possible through a tip-off from concerned residents who noticed suspicious activities around the power installations. Authorities reported that the suspects deliberately damaged the transformer, removing armoured cables with the intention of selling them for personal financial gain. The illicit act resulted in power outages for residents in the affected area, causing disruptions to homes and businesses.

Vandalism of electrical infrastructure has become a growing concern in Nigeria, where criminal syndicates target public utilities for scrap materials, often leaving entire communities in darkness. The recurring incidents have raised alarms among stakeholders in the power sector, with energy providers urging the government to implement stricter penalties for offenders. Transformer vandalism not only leads to prolonged blackouts but also incurs significant financial losses for the country, affecting economic activities and essential services.

In response to the crime, Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, commended the Girei Divisional Police Officer and his team for their swift response. He has directed the Deputy Commissioner of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the case and launch a manhunt for the remaining suspects. Authorities are working to dismantle the criminal network responsible for these repeated acts of sabotage.

The police have urged community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements around electrical installations. The command has assured residents that proactive measures are being taken to enhance security around critical infrastructure, while those found guilty of such offences will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

With the increasing rate of power infrastructure vandalism across Nigeria, experts have called for the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, such as CCTV cameras and motion sensors, around high-risk areas. Additionally, there have been recommendations for stricter laws to deter criminals from targeting public utilities. Stakeholders emphasize that only a collaborative effort between security agencies, power distribution companies, and local communities can effectively curb this growing menace.

As investigations continue, the arrested suspects will face legal proceedings upon the completion of inquiries. Law enforcement authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all perpetrators, including those still at large, are brought to justice.
