The Premier League has provided clarity on why Liverpool was awarded a penalty during their 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
In the match, referee Michael Oliver initially missed Matthijs de Ligt’s handball. VAR officials intervened and advised him to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. After the review, Oliver pointed to the spot, and Mohamed Salah converted to make it 2-1 for Liverpool.
The Premier League explained that VAR recommended an on-field review for a possible handball by de Ligt. The officials deemed his arm was raised in an unnatural position, leading to the penalty.
The match had earlier seen Lisandro Martinez give United the lead before Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool. Amad Diallo later restored parity, securing a 2-2 draw.
