Prominent Nigerian Politicians Lead Condolence Visit to Governor Makinde Following the Loss of His Elder Brother

In a moving show of solidarity and support, a group of distinguished Nigerian political figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Samuel Ortom of Benue State, visited Oyo State to pay their respects to Governor Seyi Makinde following the heartbreaking passing of his elder brother, Sunday Makinde. The condolence visit took place at the governor’s Ikolaba residence on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, and was a somber occasion for all involved.

Governor Wike was accompanied by a delegation of notable figures, including Senators Sandy Onor, Philip Aduda, Olaka Nwogu, Mao Ohuabunwa, and former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Chibudom Nwuche. The presence of these political heavyweights highlighted the respect and admiration they hold for Governor Makinde, not only as a colleague but as a leader with whom they have shared common goals and aspirations for the progress of Nigeria.

Sunday Makinde, the governor’s elder brother, tragically passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the age of 65. The loss has deeply affected the Makinde family, and the political community across Nigeria. As the family prepares for the burial, which will take place on Friday, February 7, the public is reminded of the deep connections shared among Nigeria’s leaders, regardless of political affiliations, especially in times of personal tragedy.

The funeral arrangements have been set, with events commencing on Thursday, February 6, with a Service of Songs, a fitting tribute to the life of the late Sunday Makinde. On Sunday, February 9, a thanksgiving service will be held at the St. Peter’s Cathedral in Aremo, Ibadan, followed by a reception after the interment.

Governor Makinde, known for his unwavering commitment to the development of Oyo State, has received an outpouring of support from his fellow political leaders and Nigerians alike, demonstrating the unifying power of empathy and compassion in times of personal loss. This visit from key political figures underscores the importance of community and the ties that bind the country’s leadership across states and party lines.

As Nigerians continue to grieve the loss of a beloved brother, the solidarity displayed by these political leaders sends a powerful message about the importance of standing together, not only in moments of celebration but also in times of sorrow. The visit serves as a reminder that despite the challenges faced by the country, human connections and compassion should always come first.
