A Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul on Thursday for talks with US officials aimed at resolving ongoing disputes over the operations of their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow.
The meeting, held at the US consul general’s residence, focuses on improving conditions for diplomats and addressing issues related to embassy staffing and properties. While the discussions do not cover the ongoing war in Ukraine, they are seen as a test of both countries’ willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
The talks follow a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on February 12, as well as a high-level diplomatic meeting in Saudi Arabia on February 18. Since taking office, Trump has shifted away from the hardline stance of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who sought to isolate Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, Ukraine and its European allies remain concerned that Trump’s push to end the conflict could lead to a deal that undermines their security.
A spokesperson for the US State Department emphasized that the agenda would not include political or security matters, nor discussions about Ukraine.
“To be clear, there are no political or security issues on the agenda. Ukraine is not on the agenda. The constructiveness of these talks will become apparent very quickly; either issues will get resolved or they won’t. We will know soon if Russia is really willing to engage in good faith,” the spokesperson said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also confirmed that the primary focus of the meeting is to address practical concerns affecting the work of Russian diplomats in the United States and their American counterparts in Russia.
The outcome of the discussions may signal whether both sides are ready to ease tensions and improve diplomatic relations.
