Sanwo-Olu Launches 2,200 Housing Units for Police, Donates 260 Patrol Vehicles and Security Gear

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has initiated a transformative redevelopment of the Ijeh Police Barracks in Obalende to construct 2,200 modern housing units for the Nigerian Police Force. The project, which was launched at a groundbreaking ceremony, aims to address the housing deficit in Lagos and provide better living conditions for law enforcement officers and their families.

During the event, the governor also donated 260 patrol vehicles, bulletproof vests, ballistic helmets, and other security equipment to the police and various security agencies. These tools, sourced through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, are designed to enhance the operational capacity of security personnel and ensure quick responses to threats.

Speaking at the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the redevelopment, noting the dilapidated state of the Ijeh Police Barracks due to decades of wear and inadequate maintenance. “For decades, this barracks stood as a symbol of resilience, sheltering countless officers who have dedicated their lives to protecting our state. However, the wear and tear of time, coupled with insufficient maintenance, led to severe structural dilapidation,” he said.

The governor emphasized that the housing project is part of a broader initiative to bridge Lagos’ housing deficit while ensuring the welfare of law enforcement officers. He stressed that creating a safe and conducive living environment for the police is critical to the collective safety and security of all Lagosians.

Sanwo-Olu also reiterated his administration’s commitment to equipping law enforcement with the necessary tools to tackle security challenges. He stated that the donated vehicles and security gear would bolster the capacity of officers to respond effectively to crime and protect lives and property across the state.

Inspector General Commends Initiative

The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and stakeholders for prioritizing the welfare of the police force. In a press release shared via the Nigerian Police Force’s official X handle (@PoliceNG), the IGP assured that the police would closely monitor the construction process to ensure the timely and successful delivery of the housing units.

This redevelopment project underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of security personnel while addressing the housing challenges in the state, marking a significant step toward improved law enforcement efficiency and community safety.
