Shettima Moves to Resolve Hajj Visa Concerns and Assures Nigerian Pilgrims of a Smooth Journey Amid Saudi Visa Restrictions

Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima has stepped in to address concerns over potential visa denials for intending pilgrims ahead of the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. His intervention comes amid reports of a contractual dispute with a Saudi service provider, Mashariq Al-Dhahabiah, which has raised fears that many Nigerian pilgrims could face challenges in securing their visas. The Vice President has assured the public that no Nigerian intending pilgrim will be left behind due to visa-related issues, emphasizing that the government is taking all necessary measures to ensure a seamless and hitch-free pilgrimage experience.

The meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together key stakeholders, including the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), in an urgent effort to find a solution to the growing concerns. Shettima made it clear that the Federal Government is committed to protecting the interests of Nigerian pilgrims and will do everything possible to ensure their full participation in this year’s pilgrimage. He reaffirmed that the government would not allow bureaucratic obstacles or contractual disputes to jeopardize the once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey of thousands of Nigerians.

His assurance follows rising tensions over allegations that the leadership of NAHCON had canceled contractual agreements with Saudi-based service providers, a move that some feared could derail preparations for the upcoming Hajj. However, the Chairman of NAHCON, Prof. Abdullahi Usman, dismissed these claims, stating that the contract in question was initially canceled by the Saudi authorities themselves before being reinstated and later revoked once again. He maintained that the commission was working within the legal framework to ensure that every intending pilgrim from Nigeria would be accommodated.

The controversy erupted when the Forum of Chief Executive Officers of State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies, and Commissions raised alarms over the potential consequences of the contractual dispute. The forum, through its Secretary, Abubakar Salihu, warned that the cancellation of agreements with Saudi service providers could put thousands of pilgrims at risk of missing the 2025 Hajj. However, NAHCON has strongly refuted these concerns, asserting that alternative arrangements are in place to guarantee a smooth process.

Beyond the specific issues affecting Hajj pilgrims, Nigeria is also actively engaging with Saudi authorities following the kingdom’s recent decision to impose new visa restrictions on travelers from 14 countries, including Nigeria. The new policy restricts travelers from these nations to single-entry visas valid for only 30 days, eliminating the option for multiple-entry or extended stays. While this change does not directly affect those traveling for Hajj, Umrah, or diplomatic missions, it has raised concerns among business travelers, tourists, and those visiting family members.

The affected countries, which include Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen, have been placed under stricter visa guidelines, limiting their travel flexibility. Nigerian officials have, however, expressed optimism that this restriction is a temporary measure. A spokesperson for the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alkasim Abdulkadir, suggested that the move could be related to the upcoming Ramadan season, as Saudi Arabia seeks to manage the influx of visitors during this period.

While acknowledging that visa issuance is a sovereign decision of the Saudi government, the Nigerian authorities have assured citizens that diplomatic engagements are ongoing to resolve the issue. The government remains confident that this new restriction will not have a long-term impact on Nigerians who wish to travel for legitimate purposes. Officials have reiterated that despite the single-entry limitation, thousands of Nigerians continue to secure visas to Saudi Arabia daily, demonstrating that travel to the kingdom remains open and accessible.

The importance of ensuring a smooth pilgrimage for Nigerian Muslims cannot be overstated. With Hajj being one of the five pillars of Islam, many spend their entire lives saving for this spiritual journey. Any uncertainty surrounding visa approvals can cause immense distress among intending pilgrims, making government intervention crucial. Shettima’s decisive actions and the firm stance taken by NAHCON signal a strong commitment to ensuring that this year’s pilgrimage proceeds without disruption.

The Nigerian government’s swift response to both the Hajj visa concerns and the broader Saudi visa restrictions reflects its dedication to protecting the rights and interests of its citizens on the global stage. The focus now remains on securing a resolution that guarantees all intending pilgrims can perform their religious obligations without facing unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. As diplomatic discussions continue, Nigerian travelers and pilgrims are urged to stay informed through official channels to avoid misinformation and unnecessary panic.
