The Sokoto State Government has extended its condolences to victims of a massive fire that ravaged the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ section of Kara Market, leaving over 50 shops destroyed. The fire, which struck in the early hours, caused extensive damage, wiping out goods and property valued in the millions of naira.
The blaze consumed 132 grinding machines and significant food supplies, including rice, millet, and beans, vital to many traders’ businesses. The financial impact on the market community has been described as devastating, with many livelihoods now at risk.
In response to the tragedy, Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir visited the scene to express sympathy and solidarity with the affected traders. Gobir’s visit underscored the government’s commitment to providing immediate support and finding long-term solutions to prevent such incidents.
During his visit, Gobir announced the formation of a committee that will assess the full extent of the damage. The committee is also tasked with developing strategies to mitigate fire risks in the future, particularly as the harmattan season increases the potential for such disasters.
Gobir cautioned market users and residents to take extra care during the harmattan, urging them to adopt fire prevention measures. He stressed the importance of vigilance to avoid future tragedies.
The Deputy Governor reassured victims that the government would take swift action once the committee’s recommendations are reviewed. He reaffirmed the state administration’s dedication to providing necessary relief and assistance to those impacted by the fire.
