Trump Administration Halts LGBTQ and Black Lives Matter Flags at US Embassies, Citing ‘One Flag Policy’

The Trump administration has issued a directive prohibiting the display of any flags other than the United States flag at American embassies worldwide. This move is seen as part of former President Donald Trump’s broader agenda to curtail LGBTQ representation and activism within government institutions.

The policy, outlined in a memo titled “One Flag Policy,” was first reported by The Guardian (UK). The memo expressly bans the flying of LGBTQ Pride flags and Black Lives Matter banners, which were permitted during the Biden administration. According to the directive, the U.S. flag is the sole emblem authorized to represent the nation at both domestic and international facilities.

“Starting immediately, only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at US facilities, both domestic and abroad, and featured in US government content,” the memo reads. The policy further emphasizes that the U.S. flag is a unifying symbol that represents the country’s shared principles of liberty, justice, and democracy.

The decision follows backlash from conservatives after Pride flags were prominently displayed during the 2023 Pride Month celebrations under the Biden administration, including a widely criticized display at the White House. Critics labeled these actions as a departure from traditional values, prompting Trump’s administration to introduce measures to limit such displays.

This policy aligns with a series of executive orders signed on Trump’s first day back in office, signaling a shift in the federal government’s approach to social and cultural issues. While supporters of the move praise it as a step toward reasserting national unity, LGBTQ advocates and civil rights groups have condemned it as an attack on diversity and inclusion.

As the debate continues, the directive has drawn attention globally, reigniting discussions around representation, governance, and the evolving definition of what the U.S. flag symbolizes in a deeply polarized political landscape.
