TUC Urges FG to Tolerate Viral Corps Member as Nigerians Struggle with Economic Hardship

A heated debate has erupted over the treatment of an NYSC member, Ushie Uguamaye, after she criticized the government’s economic policies in a viral TikTok video. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has stepped into the controversy, urging the federal government to exercise restraint and tolerance toward citizens voicing their frustrations over the current economic crisis.

Uguamaye, a Lagos-based corps member, took to social media to express her concerns about the harsh economic realities under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Her video, which resonated with many Nigerians facing financial struggles, quickly gained traction. However, the attention also brought alleged threats from NYSC officials, pressuring her to delete the post. While the NYSC is yet to issue an official response, her claims have sparked widespread reactions.

TUC President Festus Osifo, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, stated that the government must recognize the deep frustration of its citizens. He advised officials not to target individuals for expressing their grievances but rather to understand the root cause of the dissatisfaction.

“They have to develop resilience and understand that people are frustrated, hungry, and tired,” Osifo said. “If someone vents their frustration, I strongly believe the government should not take it personally or seek to punish such individuals.”

He further emphasized that Uguamaye, as a young corps member, poses no threat to the government and was simply expressing personal struggles. According to Osifo, the administration should show patience and be more tolerant as Nigerians continue to face severe economic hardship.

The controversy has also drawn the attention of Amnesty International, which strongly condemned any intimidation directed at Uguamaye. In a statement released on its official X (Twitter) handle, the organization warned against silencing dissenting voices.

“The Nigerian authorities must stop responding with violence and threats to individuals and groups who express dissenting opinions — in utter disregard for the Nigerian constitution and international law. Holding and voicing dissenting views is not a crime,” Amnesty International declared.

As the conversation continues, this case highlights the growing discontent among Nigerians struggling with rising inflation, high living costs, and economic uncertainties. Many see this as a test of the government’s willingness to allow free speech and address the underlying concerns of its people.
