A deadly communal clash in Iwaro, located in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, has claimed two lives and left multiple buildings destroyed. The violent confrontation, which erupted on Sunday and escalated into Monday, involved youths from Oka Odo, Owake, and Ebo communities over a long-standing land dispute.
The conflict reportedly began when some youths from Oka Odo, while on a hunting expedition, were mistaken for rivals from Owake and attacked. This misunderstanding fueled violence, leading to widespread destruction across the community.
A local source described the devastation, stating, “Both the palace and the event hall have been completely destroyed. Several homes were set on fire, including the house of Mr. Omorinbola Francis, also known as Ekoro. Sadly, efforts to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful.”
In response to the escalating violence, Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has called for calm, urging all parties involved to embrace peace. Afolabi condemned the destruction, emphasizing that such actions only hinder development and perpetuate suffering within the community.
To contain the situation, a police team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Ops) has been dispatched to the area to restore order and prevent further bloodshed.
As tensions simmer, the state government and local authorities are reportedly exploring ways to mediate the land dispute and bring lasting peace to the troubled community.
The incident underscores the urgency of resolving communal conflicts in rural areas, which continue to pose significant threats to lives and property across the region.
